UW–Madison’s John Baldacchino contributed a chapter to the newly published book, “Dewey, Education, and the Mediterranean,” which is the fourth volume in the series, Comparative Education and the Mediterranean Region.

Baldacchino is a professor of art and art education with the School of Education’s Art Department.

John Dewey was a philosopher, born in 1859, who developed ideas on human nature, democracy, and ideas. In his paper, Baldacchino discusses the influence on Dewey’s work of Mediterranean culture and society.

“What does it mean to have ‘echoes of the Mediterranean’ in one’s work?” Baldacchino asks in his introduction. Or, he writes, “Does it make sense to ask if Dewey was influenced by Mediterranean theorists, philosophers, scientists, or artists?”
