Katie Hudnall is a woodworker, furniture maker, sculptor, and illustrator whose art practice is built on a curiosity with woodworking processes that spans from traditional carpentry techniques to more sculptural ones. Assembled intuitively from salvaged materials, her pieces feel both carefully crafted and cobbled together—their surfaces exposing and mapping the relationship between the processes and materials used and the finished forms produced. Hudnall’s works range from fully functional furniture and lighting to “furnitural” objects that use recognizable furniture aspects to engage with the viewer on a conceptual level.
Hudnall received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design/Woodworking. She has been the recipient of a Virginia Museum of Fine Art Fellowship, the Windgate Wood Residency at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, an Anderson Ranch Residency, a Creative Renewal Fellowship Grant from the Indianapolis Arts Council, and will have two upcoming artist residencies at the Windgate ITE International Fellowship in Philadelphia and the Australia National University in Canberra, Australia. In 2019, she was invited to be a member of the Wood Design Team at World Wood Day in Stübing, Austria at the Österreichisches Freilichtmuseum (the Open-Air Museum). She has exhibited nationally and internationally in notable group shows, including Studio Furniture: The Next Generation traveling exhibition curated by Dean Wilson, Tom Loeser, and Cory Robinson, Crafting A Continuum traveling exhibition curated by Heather Sealy Lineberry and Peter Held, and Making A Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking at the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia. Solo exhibitions include The Longest Distance Between Two Points at the Joan Derryberry Gallery of Art Appalachian Center for Craft at Tennessee Tech University, and The Texture of Imperfection at the Gordon Art Gallery in Norfolk, Virginia, curated by John Roth. Hudnall is working with Artistic Director and Curator Jennifer Navva Milliken on an upcoming solo exhibition at the Center for Art in Wood. Her work has been included in many publications including Studio Furniture: The Next Generation, Crafting A Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft, and the upcoming book, Making A Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking, from Routledge. She has served as a board member of the non-profit education organization the Furniture Society and the summer workshop and fall craft education Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for A Workshop of Our Own, a woodworking community experience for women and gender non-conforming craftspeople in Baltimore, Maryland.
