March 24 – 28

Reception: Wednesday, March 25, 5-8pm

Location: Art Lofts Gallery, 111 N Frances St, Madison, WI

Bright Obscurities presents a collection of paintings by MFA Candidate, Kalil Mitchell. Mitchell’s luminous abstractions explore the interplay between light, space, and perception, using shifting layers of light and touch to evoke states of impermanence and transcendence. As a focal point of both the painting process and its resolve, light inherits physical and psycho-spiritual significance in its ability to penetrate our senses and our orientation towards the world and ourselves. Mitchell uses illumination and obscurity as optical tools to elicit states of flux and spatial ambiguity, positioning the image on a liminal threshold of becoming.

Mitchell’s work has been exhibited in both national and international galleries, located in California, London, New York, New Mexico, and locally in Wisconsin. She is an MFA Candidate and painting instructor at the department of Painting and Drawing in UW–Madison. She graduated from San Jose State University (CA) in 2021 with a BFA in painting and pictorial arts.

The Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibitions season continues with Kalil Mitchell’s exhibit Bright Obscurities. The MFA Thesis Exhibitions mark the culmination of a three-year degree program that emphasizes development of a rigorous studio art practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Exploring an interdisciplinary approach to art making, as well as coursework in art history and related fields, artists cultivate professional practices that facilitate a sustainable career in the arts.
