This body of work is based on the experience of witnessing my matrilineal line fade away due to dementia. Through the making of these sculptures, I explore what it means to remember and hold on to a person. I examine how memories can be stored through amorphous ceramic forms and fragmented furniture, telling tales of distortion, loss of structure, and vague understandings of reality.
until I, too captures the slow degradation of memory, losing the ability to recognize that which was once familiar. The stable and recognizable furniture loses its sense of reality, as its purpose becomes hazy and unclear in the destruction and fragmentation. The ceramic forms, emulating the progression of disease, seemingly slump and start to become an ooze, grasping onto structures as it slips away. This installation is an encapsulation of me witnessing now, and, perhaps, it may be a foreshadowing of my fate.
The Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibitions season continues with Morgan Baldinelli’s exhibit until I, too. The MFA Thesis Exhibitions mark the culmination of a three-year degree program that emphasizes development of a rigorous studio art practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Exploring an interdisciplinary approach to art making, as well as coursework in art history and related fields, artists cultivate professional practices that facilitate a sustainable career in the arts.
