Throughout my childhood my father would often say this phrase as I walked out the door—words he still repeats to me today as an adult. As with most sayings in Spanish there is no direct translation for this. It loosely means to “watch your back” or to “stay alert”, ultimately implying to always be on guard since we never know what to expect next. Ponte Trucha is a response, it’s the way I’ve learned to live as a Chicano “third culture kid” raised in a country that cultivates uncertainty and instills many of the fears that shape my life. Through photography, video, textiles, printmaking and book arts, I engage with the meaning of Ponte Trucha and what I hold closest to my heart—my memories—and my fear of them fading as time passes.
The Master of Fine Arts Qualifier Exhibition season continues with Almanza’s exhibition Ponte Trucha! The qualifier solo exhibitions are presented by the graduate students during their fourth semester as the evaluation review of their creative work to qualify for advancement in the MFA program. Come view the work and research by our newest cohort of developing artists!
