Join your art education colleagues on UW-Madison’s beautiful campus for this workshop led by Dr. Kelley DeCleene, who taught art for 27 years in k-12 mainstreamed classrooms, 5 years in a school exclusively for children with special needs, plus studied the intersection of art and disabilities in her recent dissertation research.
She will encourage you to think deeply about what visual arts learning looks like and means to students with profound physical and intellectual disabilities. You’ll learn how to teach in and through the visual arts, incorporating universal design strategies, modified tools and environments, and personalized goal-setting and assessment. You will explore instructional models that create a safe, accessible, and sensory-sensitive learning environment, including technology integration, alternative communication methods, and behavior management strategies.
