Please join us for a panel discussion on approaches to writing and contemporary art with artists and MFA Candidates Jami Balicki and Daniella Thach, and Art History PhD scholars Andrew Suggs and Laken Sylvander, moderated by Art History PhD scholar Defne Oruç. Presented as part of the GradForum’s yearly programming, this panel reflects the graduate student organization’s commitment to creating spaces that examine the links between theory and practice in scholarly exchanges across the Art and Art History Departments.
Jami Balicki is a descendent of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin whose work is grounded within the histories and stories passed down to her through her matriarchal lineage. Her art practice is collaborative and multidisciplinary, incorporating photography, printmaking, papermaking, and text to trace the intersections between archive, community, and personal experience.
Daniella Thach is a Cambodian-American artist based in the Midwest working in light (ពន្លឺ) and new media. Culture and craft go hand in hand in their practice. They are invested in what is brought down from mother to daughter and from master to apprentice; both connections develop deep understandings that pass its traditions into the future.
Andrew Suggs is an arts and AIDS worker from Appalachian Tennessee. Their work and research focus on contemporary art and HIV/AIDS, queer art and artists, performance, disruptive strategies, and photography. Andrew is a curator, writer, and practicing artist. They are a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Laken Sylvander is a doctoral student, researcher, artist, and curator. She is the Creative Director and founding Co-Steward of Climate Futures Studio, an interdisciplinary home for strengthening narrative power in the climate justice movement.
