American River is rooted in autobiography. Using memory as a vehicle, Chase Bisson composes paintings drawn from his experiences in his rural hometown of Placerville, California, and the broader United States. From a fight at the county fair to surreal small town dive bars, the form developed in his language of painting echoes and builds upon his spoken word poetry—and visa versa. Starting from photographs of his community or bits of poetry, the paintings and drawings combined with spoken word yield a type of confession to the audience in a bid for intimacy in an increasingly disconnected world.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Art MFA Qualifier Exhibition season continues with Chase Bisson’s art exhibition. The qualifier solo exhibitions are presented by the graduate students during their fourth semester as the evaluation review of their creative work to qualify for advancement in the MFA program.
