April 22 – 26

Reception: Friday, April 24, 5-8pm

Location: Backspace Gallery, Art Lofts, 111 N Frances St, Madison, WI

Exploring the concept of individuals inhabiting loops of continuous activity, and what it means to become aware of and interrupt states of constant effort and motion, this exhibition references the experience of viewing solar eclipse events, and that experience as one that may temporarily pull individuals out of normal routine to be present with an extreme natural phenomenon.

The work in the show includes art created with light and video projection, and will be shown in the dark in a large gallery space. Many of the works are these portraits of people who were photographed looking up while experiencing total solar eclipse events in the US in 2017 and 2024, taken by NASA photographers. The show includes using these images from NASA’s public image collection, and recreating the portraits only using light and shadow, to appear and fade from the gallery in timed cycles.

The Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibitions season continues with Alex Mikev’s exhibit Punctured Loops. The MFA Thesis Exhibitions mark the culmination of a three-year degree program that emphasizes development of a rigorous studio art practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Exploring an interdisciplinary approach to art making, as well as coursework in art history and related fields, artists cultivate professional practices that facilitate a sustainable career in the arts.
