Tomiko Jones, an associate professor in the School of Education’s Art Department, has been honored with a Vilas Faculty Early-Career Investigator Award. This award recognizes exceptional research and teaching excellence among UW–Madison faculty in the early stages of their careers.

Since joining the department in fall 2018, Jones has made a significant impact through her research and artistic practice. She says her research is often a response to not finding herself in the history taught in academia or the archives she’s visited. The desire to address the feeling of being excluded from these official histories has shaped her research.

Jones has exhibited widely on international, national, and regional levels, with six solo exhibitions, one two-person exhibition, and 27 group exhibitions. This exceptional number of exhibitions speaks to her success in researching at the forefront of a constantly evolving contemporary discourse within the arts.

Jones is also planning three upcoming national solo exhibitions and three residencies: two national and one international.
