UW–Madison’s John Baldacchino, a professor in the School of Education’s Art Department and an affiliate in the Department of Educational Policy Studies, is the co-editor of two recent publications highlighting his scholarly work across the disciplines of art and education.
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Continental Philosophy of Education
This anthology, which Baldacchino co-edited with Herner Sæverot, a professor of education at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, is described as “the first reference work to explore and define what continental philosophy of education is or could be, and what its boundaries are, serving as a point of entry for those who need an overview of the ideas in the field.”
Called a “monumental undertaking of scholarship and intellectual bravery,” the book includes 34 chapters written by leading scholars from around the world who discuss a range of continental thinkers and look at how their work has influenced the wider field of philosophy of education. It is subdivided into three sections covering the metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics of education, with chapters focusing on philosophical concepts such as otherness, empathy and personhood, and problems including political influences on education and the limits of education.

Revisiting Arts Education
Baldacchino co-edited this special issue of the International Journal of Art and Design Education with Dennis Atkinson, professor emeritus at Goldsmiths College, University of London. In their editorial introduction, Baldacchino and Atkinson write that the special issue includes papers exploring the “complex and problematic domain art education, directly or indirectly asking what this field of educational practice might be or become in relation to our contemporary epoch in all of its complexity.”
