Neon work by UW–Madison’s Tom Zickuhr was featured in a recent article in the Wisconsin State Journal about the restoration of the iconic Badger Liquor Shop sign on State St. in Madison.
Zickuhr, a lecturer in the School of Education’s Art Department, teaches the popular “Neon: Light as Sculpture” class at UW–Madison each semester and is a longtime neon artist. Since 1999 he has also been the owner of the Neon Lab on Madison’s East Side, which Sign Art Studio in Mount Horeb contracted to do the neon work on the 17-foot-high, 5-foot-wide sign.
Zickuhr made about 200 feet of neon for the sign. “It’s beautiful. It’s just a great design and has a unique Art Deco font to it that lends itself really well to how it’s placed vertically,” he told the Wisconsin State Journal.
