Melissa Thorne is a painter whose work examines the relationship between domestic space and visual phenomena, using pattern as a cultural indicator of history and identity.
Thorne lives and works in upstate New York. Her work has been featured in galleries, museums, artist-run collectives and public spaces; including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Gridspace (Brooklyn), Optical Project (Houston), Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Devin Borden Gallery (Houston), and Galerie Anke Schmidt (Cologne), among others. She has received residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Ucross Foundation and the Santa Fe Art institute; as well as a Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). Thorne received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, and her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.
