Awards and Acheivements8/1/06 In February, Dave Beck was sent a "Cease and Desist" Letter from Rockstar Games, a major video game company, ordering him to remove his online public art piece: www.thehighestscore.com. Check out details on the legal controversy here (for the original article on the piece, go here) . Dave's piece is also the subject of Matteo Bittanti's essay: "Don't Fuck With The Warriors! Self Expression vs. Copyright Infringement in the Age of Machinima", in the upcoming book compiled by Henry Lowood & Michael Nitsche, The Machinima Reader. Stephanie Liner was featured in the Nova Art Fair Fashion Train and the Chicago Tribune. Check out the article and slideshow here. Amy Chaloupka has an unbelievabley full plate for this coming Fall. For starters, she has a commission that will be ready in the Fall, 2006: A percent for arts commission in Santa Fe for a work of public art at a newly constructed public library. Also in the fall at the International Sculpture Center, she will be a grounds for sculpture winner. She also has an upcoming exhibition at the Soap Factory, in Minneapolis, Mn. Sept, 2006. She was also awarded a Vermont Studio Residency, for the Fall. Amy is currently working in Exhibitions at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI. Dave Beck, Rachel Bruya Walker, BA Harrington, and Josh Wilichowski have all teamed together to have some fun with an artists cheesiest nightmare - creating public artwork in the form of cows. Their team, dubbed "Udder Force Four" created two cows for the statewide competition "Cows on Parade". The cows will be displayed around the city of Madison all summer. They will then be auctioned off and all proceeds will go to charity. Check out pictures and more information as to where these are located here. Josh Wilichowski recieved a commission from the City of Madison to create the signs for the Heritage Heights Neighborhood A piece by Dave Beck was accepted into the PhotoMidwest Show, a seven state juried competition that will be exhibiting at the Wisconsin Union Galleries from September through November of this year. 1/26/05 Josh Wilichowski currently has a piece in the 110 Gallery's "Snake & Snatch" Show. Each artist came with their own unique attitudes and experiences, thus creating an new art exhibit dealing with contemporary views of sex and gender in our culture. For further information on this show, go to www.oneten.org. Anna Campbell, Alice Laskey-Castle, Zak Bruder, Chele Isaaac and Miel-Margarita Paredes are participating in a show titled Menagerie. It is a group exhibit exploring the use of animals in art as symbol and subject matter. It is at the Commonwealth Gallery. Cedar Marie has a show currently running at the UW-Marathon Campus. While her work is up she will be giving lectures and guest critiques. Her current body of work is titled Study of Living Things. Amy Chaloupka participated in a show at the Commonwealth Gallery titled Merge/Purge. It was an evening of performing, music, and visual arts. Students from Illinois State University and UW Madison also participated. As well as Amy, Stephanie Liner and Erin Jones also headlined the show. 11/15/04 Cedar Marie has been awarded the 2005 David and Edith Sinaiko Frank Graduate Fellowship for a Woman in the Arts. Selection is based on excellence in creativity, and is designed to support women graduate students in the arts by providing an opportunity to present their work publicly. Cedar has also recently has been awarded the visiting artist position at UW-Marathon, for this coming January. She will have an opportunity to show her work on campus, as well as interact with the undergraduate art department through studio visits and lectures. Anna Campbell, Dave Beck, Kristoff Wickman, and Tyler Peterson have had proposals accepted by the Campus Arts Collaborative (CAC). They each will be given a grant to install a piece of artwork permanently in the North Hall (The Political Science Building) this coming Spring. The CAC is designed to nurture collaboration amongst the different departments on campus, through the creation of art. During this year's election, Dave Beck was invited to participate in a show entitled Voice your Vote, back in Minneapolis, MN. The show ran for three weeks on the campus of St. Olaf College.
10/25/04 The International Sculpture Center has awarded James Poulos (2nd year graduate student) and Kristof Wickman (3rd year undergraduate) with the Outstanding Student Achievement in Sculpture Award as well as awarding a third U.W. Sculpture graduate student Ben Buswell (3rd year grad) an honorable mention. These students compete for this award internationally and will be included in an exhibition at the ISC Grounds for Sculpture Gallery as well as being published in Sculpture Magazine. This is the fifth year in a row that the University of Wisconsin Madison has had award winners in this competition. In her first year of graduate school Amy Chaloupka (2nd year grad) received a University Wide fellowship for the 2003-04, based on her outstanding artistic merit. In the summer of 2004 Anna Campbell (2nd year grad) was awarded the Pleasant T Rowland Foundation Fellowship which is a month long summer residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Cedar Marie (3rd year grad) is a nominee for a 2005 Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship in Sculpture. Her work was recently exhibited in the Cambridge Art Association's National Prize Show, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Juror: Robert Fitzpatrick, Pritzker Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Illinois, and at the Jewett Gallery in San Francisco, California. On a local level eleven University of Wisconsin Sculpture students including James Poulos, Anna Campbell, Amy Chaloupka, Ben Buswell, Mark Sauter, Alice Laske -Castel, Kristoff Wickman, Tyler Peterson, Cassie Thorton, Patrick Mc Donough, and Jeff Fitzgerald participated in an exhibition in the 10,000 plus square foot Ironworks building in Madison, Wisconsin. The exhibition was titled “Over Oceans… “, and was widely praised for its ambition and quality of work. News of Recent Graduates: Bea Drysdale who graduated in the spring of 2004 with her M.F.A. has been awarded two residencies for the upcoming year. One will be Sculpture Space –in Upstate New York the other at Anderson Ranch in Colorado. Glen Williams a 2003 graduate of the M.F.A. program received a tenure track Sculpture position at Northwest Missouri State University and is participating in exhibitions nationally. Richard Holland a 2003 M.F.A. graduate in Sculpture was the Recipient of the Summer, Fall, and Winter 2003 Albert K. Murray Educational Fund Scholarship and has an up and coming solo exhibition titled: Temporary – a study in recordings that will take place at Deadtech in Chicago, October 2004. Chris Walla a 2003 MFA graduate was awarded a tenure track Sculpture position at Moorhead State University in Moorehead Minnesota. He has recently been included in Queer Identity / Body Comodification WORKS: Art and Performance in San Jose, California and will be showing at Studio Aiello in Denver Colorado in March/April. John Byler a 2004 graduate with an MFA in sculpture is currently working as a Sculpture Technician at Auburn University in Auburn Alabama. His work can currently be seen in a group exhibition at the Wendy Cooper Gallery in Chicago. Amanda Browder a 2001 graduate has been working as an instructor in both the First Year Program and the Materials Studies departments of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been shown widely with recent exhibitions at Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery in Chicago, Gallery 312 Chicago, Western Exhibitions, Chicago, white Columns, New York, and more.
