Getting Involved...Art Organizations and Community-Based Practices

The Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison makes efforts to provide professional and career opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students and strongly encourages students to gain professional experience before graduation. Students from our Department have successfully held artist residencies, internships, and positions at a number of national and international institutions. Please contact the Art Office for more information on any of the opportunities provided below.

Student Organizations

The Art Department encourages students to be involved in the Arts on-campus.  The organizations below provide both experience and networking opportunities.

Below: "Wiigwaasi-jiimaan, These Canoes Carry Culture" was a project developed by visiting artist-in-residence Wayne Valliere to contribute to ongoing efforts to enhance views of Native American cultures among Ojibwe youth and within the University of Wisconsin community at large.

Internship & Research Opportunities

Internships provide real-world experience for students and positions can often be held for credit.

Finding internships: Start looking for an internship early and apply both locally and nationally.  Speak with professors and professionals in your intended field for suggestions and opportunities.  When searching for opportunities, we recommend creative online searches and even calling institutions to ask about opportunities. We recommend contacting GoGlobal for a list of internships and working with the Writing Center to improve your resume, cover letter, and application.

Applying: Please read our list of tips on applying for an internship. Students who have found art-related internships and would like to earn university credit while completing the internship may enroll in Art 393 - Internships in Art. Contact Professor Gail Simpson for more information.

Students in the Art Department have interned and conducted research at many businesses, institutions and on-campus departments. Some of them are listed here:
