MFA in Studio Art

Our faculty believe strongly in the value of interdisciplinary work, and our program offers students considerable flexibility. We both allow and encourage students accepted into a particular program area to seek out and study with faculty from other disciplines. Students may select members of their graduate committee from any area within the Art Department as well as from other departments in the university.

An important strength of the graduate program lies in the breadth and diversity of its art faculty. They teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise, and most work with a broad range of students.

The Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is proud to offer funding opportunities to our students. Students are invited to apply annually for travel and professional development grants, scholarships, fellowships, and various positions within the department.

Currently, nearly 80% of graduate students in the Art Department receive full funding in the form of fellowships, teaching or project assistant positions. The remaining students generally receive partial funding in the form of scholarships. Fellowships and assistantships include full tuition remission, a monthly stipend, and generous benefits, including health coverage.

Continuing students apply in November through the Department’s Annual Funding Application. All incoming students apply for funding within the Department’s admittance application. All teaching, instructional support and project assistant positions are one year appointments. Fellowships are awarded to incoming students only.
